    A Timeless Treasure

History, Types & Modern Sustainable Materials

A Briljant Gift blog about the magic of gold and the evolution of precious metals.

Gold has fascinated humanity for more than 5,000 years. It is the first metal ever discovered and worked - found in rivers, gleaming, indestructible, and immediately usable without smelting technology. No other material has had such a profound cultural, spiritual, and economic impact as gold. In this blog, we explore the rich history of gold, the different types of gold used in jewelry today, and the modern meaning of Eco Brass and Eco Messing - sustainable materials that perfectly align with the Briljant Gift vision.

🌞 1. The Origins of Gold: From Divine Metal to World Currency

    Antiquity

The oldest gold objects date back to the Copper Age, more than five thousand years ago, including finds from the region of modern-day Bulgaria. In ancient Egypt, gold was considered the flesh of the gods: masks, sarcophagi, and temple walls were covered with it because it held the color of the sun and did not decay. Nubia, “the land of gold,” supplied the pharaohs with ore for centuries.

    Mesopotamia & Early Civilizations

Around 5000 BCE, peoples in Mesopotamia were already using gold for jewelry and ceremonial objects.

    Lydia: The Birth of Money

Money as we know it began later. In Lydia, in the west of modern Turkey, the first coins were minted in the seventh century BCE from electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver. Under King Croesus, coins of purer gold and silver followed. From that moment on, gold was not only beautiful but also a standardized store of value. That dual role - symbol and currency - remains to this day.

    Middle Ages & Renaissance

Gold coins such as the Florin and the Venetian ducat symbolized financial reliability and international trade. In the Low Countries, gold was used for centuries in guilders, baptism gifts, and engagement rings. The hallmark you find in a ring today is the modern continuation of that tradition: not relying on the eye, but on a stamped purity mark.

    💛 2. What Is Gold?

Properties & Why We Value It

Gold is a precious metal that does not oxidize, has a unique yellow color, and an exceptional density of 19.320 kg/dm³. It is soft, easy to work with, and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.

These qualities make gold ideal for jewelry:

    • Colorfast

    • Hypoallergenic

    • Durable

    • Luxurious in appearance

    🥇 3. Karat Is Not Weight - It’s a Promise

Pure gold is 24 karat, or 999 thousandths. It is too soft for a ring worn daily, which is why it is alloyed with silver, copper, or palladium. The karat indicates what portion of the alloy is real gold.

    8K

In the Netherlands, 14K (585) is by far the most worn. From one gram onward, a gold object must carry an official hallmark. Below 585, a jeweler may not sell it as gold. 18K (750) contains more fine gold, holds a warmer color, and is slightly softer. For a daily ring, 14K is often the more practical choice; for a piece meant to be admired, many choose 18K.

Color does not come from the karat, but from the alloy metals:

    • Yellow gold gets its tone from copper and silver - more copper means warmer color.

    • Rose gold contains more copper, giving it a pink to red hue.

    • White gold is naturally greyish-yellow. In the EU, it is almost always alloyed with palladium (not nickel, due to regulations). A rhodium layer makes it bright white; this layer wears over time and may need refreshing.

    • Green gold appears when silver dominates the alloy - rare in modern collections.

    Gold Plating

“Gold-plated” is different: a thin layer of gold is applied to a base metal. Beautiful, but not solid gold, and it should not carry a 585 or 750 stamp. Gold-plated jewelry offers affordable luxury.

🌿 4. Eco Brass & Eco Messing: Same Family, Different Promise

    Modern Sustainable Luxury

Briljant Gift jewelry is increasingly crafted with Eco Brass and Eco Messing - materials that combine sustainability with a luxurious appearance.

    Eco Messing (Eco Brass)

Eco Messing is an environmentally friendly variant of brass, made from responsibly sourced copper and zinc, often with reduced lead content.

    It is:

    • Durable & strong

    • Lightweight

    • Comfortable to wear

    • Warm in color

    • Perfect for gold plating (18K)

In jewelry, Eco Messing provides a premium shine, a luxurious feel, and long-lasting quality - ideal for modern, conscious consumers.

    Brass Is Not Gold

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, warm yellow in color, used for centuries in hardware, instruments, and jewelry. Traditional “free-machining” brass often contains 1–3% lead, which improves machinability but is undesirable in water fittings, machining dust, and jewelry worn long-term on the skin.

    Eco Brass

Eco Brass (also written ECO BRASS) is a specific invention. Around 1998, Mitsubishi Materials developed a lead-free brass in which silicon replaces lead. A typical composition is about 75–76% copper, around 3% silicon, and the rest zinc, with a lead content of no more than 0.1%. Silicon is abundant and non-toxic. The alloy machines well, is stronger than many traditional brasses, and is more resistant to dezincification. It meets RoHS, the European directive limiting lead in many products.

Eco Messing is the Dutch umbrella term for the same concept: brass without added lead, sometimes with silicon, sometimes with bismuth. In the jewelry world, it usually means a clean copper–zinc base, suitable for gold plating or rhodium plating, and tested for lead and nickel under REACH. It is a material quality, not a universal certification. When in doubt, ask for the alloy and a test report.

    What Eco Messing Is:

    • A lead-free or near lead-free copper–zinc alloy

    • A responsible base under a gold layer

    • More recyclable than leaded brass, as it keeps lead out of the scrap stream

    What It Is Not:

    • Solid gold, even if the color resembles it

    • A replacement for a 585 or 750 hallmark

    • Automatically “recycled” or “fair trade” - those are separate claims.

A gold-plated eco-brass piece can be a beautiful, affordable gift. A 14K gold ring with a diamond is a different object, with different value and longevity. Honest labeling keeps the two clearly distinct.

💎 5. Precious Metals in the Modern Jewelry World

Precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum remain pillars of luxury, status, and craftsmanship. They form the foundation of jewelry that lasts for generations. Briljant Gift combines this ancient tradition with modern innovations such as lab-grown diamonds, eco materials, and responsibly sourced gold - allowing every wearer to enjoy timeless beauty with a contemporary vision.

    ✨ Conclusion:

Gold Is More Than a Precious Metal - It Is Heritage

From the Egyptian pharaohs to modern jewelry designers, gold tells the story of human creativity, power, beauty, and sustainability. At Briljant Gift, we honor this history by choosing materials that are both luxurious and conscious - from 14K and 18K gold to Eco Messing and lab-grown diamonds.

Gold is timeless. Gold is meaning. Gold is Briljant.
